Embryonic vs Adult Stem Cells

in Stem

The research continues regarding embryonic and adult stems c. and how they can benefit individuals. There are many differences between embryonic and adult stems c. research and therapy and below are just a few of those differences.

Before we discuss the difference first the stem c. must be defined. A stem cell is a cell that has the capability of changing into another cell type in the body such as muscle cell, skin cell or nerve cell. Research continues on stem c. because it has the capability of replacing or healing damaged tissues and cells in the body.

Embryonic stems c.are found in living, human embryos. There are advantages and disadvantages for the use of embryonic stem c.

Advantages of Embryonic Stem C.:

• It appears to have the ability to make any cell
• One cell can potentially provide an endless supply of cells with particular characteristics
• Available from embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics

Disadvantages of Embryonic Stem C.:

• Unable to differentiate into a target tissue
• Cells from a random embryo donor are likely to be rejected after transplantation
• Ability to form tumors and promoting tumor formation
• Major disadvantage - destruction of developing human life

Adult stem cells are found in various tissues and organs of the body. Primarily maintain and repair the tissues in which they are found. There are also advantages and disadvantages for the use of adult stem cells.

Advantages of Adult Stem C.:

• Cells that have been isolated from the bone marrow and from the umbilical cord have been found to be as flexible as the embryonic stem cells
• Easy to harvest - mainly the ones from the skin, muscle and bone marrow and fat
• Umbilical and placental stem cells are readily available
• Recipients who receive products of their own stem cells will not experience immune rejection
• Non-tumor forming
• No harm done to the donor
• Natural solution since they exist in our bodies
